Job Description: 

We are seeking a dedicated Special Education Life Skills Teacher to provide specialized instruction for students with disabilities in grades K–6. The teacher will develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), adapt curriculum, and support students’ academic, social, behavioral, and functional life skill development in a structured and supportive classroom environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Instruction & Student Support -

• Provide differentiated instruction to meet diverse academic, behavioral, and developmental needs.
• Adapt curriculum and instruction to align with student IEP goals.
• Teach academic, communication, social, and functional life skills using evidence-based strategies such as multisensory instruction, modeling, and repetition.
• Use specialized teaching strategies to support students’ sensory, motor, communication, thinking, and memory skills.
• Monitor student progress through ongoing assessment and adjust instruction as needed.
• Utilize assistive technology and communication systems, including AAC devices and visual supports when appropriate.
• Support students in developing independence with daily routines and adaptive life skills.

IEP Development & Compliance -

• Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
• Track student progress and maintain accurate documentation.
• Schedule and conduct IEP meetings with parents, teachers, specialists, partnering agencies, and administrators.
• Maintain accurate documentation and ensure compliance with all special education requirements.

Classroom Environment & Behavior & Support -

• Maintain a positive, structured classroom environment that promotes learning and safety.
• Teach and reinforce appropriate social behaviors using positive reinforcement and behavior supports.
• Implement Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) when needed.
• Promote student independence, emotional regulation, and self-advocacy.

Collaboration & Professional Responsibilities -

• Collaborate with teachers, specialists, and school staff to support student success.
• Oversee, guide, and support paraeducators working with students in the program.
• Participate in professional development related to special education and instructional practices.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding students, families, staff, and program information.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education and Building Administration.

Qualifications:

• Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate or ability to obtain one.
• Special Education endorsement required.
• Previous successful teaching experience with students with disabilities preferred.
• Demonstrated knowledge of state and federal special education law and strong IEP writing skills.
• Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
• Ability to differentiate instruction and support diverse learning needs.
• Safety-Care and Ukeru certification preferred.
• Experience with AAC devices and PECS preferred.
• Excellent attendance and punctuality required. 

Physical Requirements:

The job's functions requires the following physical demands:

• Occasionally lift up to 50 pounds and assist with carrying, pushing, or pulling.
• Perform physical activities such as standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, and occasional running when supporting students.
• Ability to respond to students experiencing emotional or behavioral dysregulation.
• Assist students with self-care needs such as toileting, feeding, dressing, and daily routines.
• Support use of adaptive equipment such as lifts, braces, standers, and specialized seating.
