Position Summary:

The High School Drama Director oversees all aspects of the school’s drama program, producing engaging, age-appropriate theatrical productions while cultivating an inclusive and supportive environment for student artists and crew. This role requires strong leadership, organizational skills, and collaboration with school staff, parents, and community members to maintain a thriving performing arts tradition.

Duties and Responsibilities

Production & Directing

• Direct and produce two mainstage productions per academic year (typically scheduled for early November and early March).
• Select scripts, plays, and musical materials that are appropriate for high school performers and community standards.
• Conduct open, fair, and transparent auditions, casting students based on ethical and clear evaluation criteria.
• Establish and manage an efficient production timeline, ensuring a minimum 8-week rehearsal process for each show.
• Maintain complete student supervision during all auditions, rehearsals, build sessions, performances, and theater events.

Technical, Artistic & Operational Supervision

• Coordinate costuming, hair, and makeup design to align with the production vision.
• Manage show logistics, including box office ticketing, publicity, front-of-house operations, and concessions.
• Develop and maintain a long-term plan for maintaining and upgrading light, sound, and stage equipment.

Department Collaboration & Community Engagement

• Collaborate with the Music Department to co-produce a school musical (annually or biennially).
• Recruit, train, and oversee adult volunteers to support rehearsals, backstage management, and performance nights.
• Establish clear criteria and manage the system for eligible students to earn an EHS varsity letter award in Drama.

Fiscal Management

• Manage production budgets responsibly to ensure the drama club remains financially solvent and self-sustaining after every show.

Qualifications & Requirements

Professional Qualifications

• Prior theatrical production, directing, or drama instruction experience required (high school or community theater preferred).
• Demonstrated experience working successfully with secondary (high school) students.
• Current First Aid and CPR Certification (or ability to obtain prior to start).

Physical Demands The usual and customary methods of performing this job’s functions require the following physical abilities:

• Regular movement throughout stage and auditorium spaces, including walking, sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pushing, and pulling.
• Ability to safely lift, move, and position equipment, set pieces, or props weighing up to 50 lbs.

Mandatory Conditions of Employment

• Successful clearance of the FBI and Washington State Patrol fingerprint background check.
• Successful completion of the Washington State Sexual Misconduct disclosure process.
• Eligibility verification and completion of the Federal Form I-9.
